Four armed robbers -- two of them men disguised as women
walked into a luxury jewelry store in Paris and swiped an estimated
€80 million (U.S. $101 million) in jewels. The incident, which
lasted about 15 minutes, took place Thursday around 5:30 p.m.
at the Harry Winston store near the famed Avenue des Champs-Elysees,
around the corner from a police station.
The case has been turned over to the unit in charge of handling
organized crime cases after they entered the store, the four thieves
pulled out their weapons, forced the customers and employees --
about 15 people in all -- into a corner, and grabbed jewels out of
display cases and safes, the prosecutor's office said.
The robbers seemed to know the locations of secret hiding
places for jewels and called some employees by their first names.
+ I'm pretty sure I would be suspicious from the jump.

A new space race is officially under way, and this one should have the sci-fi
geeks salivating. The project is a "space elevator," and some experts now
believe that the concept is well within the bounds of possibility && maybe
even within our lifetimes. A conference discussing developments in space
elevator concepts is being held in Japan in November, and hundreds of
engineers and scientists from Asia, Europe and the Americas are working to
design the only lift that will take you to the one hundred-thousandth floor.
Despite these developments, you could be excused for thinking it all sounds
a little far-fetched. Indeed, if successfully built, the space elevator would
be an unprecedented feat of human engineering.
A cable anchored to the Earth's surface, reaching tens of thousands of
kilometers into space, balanced with a counterweight attached at the other
end is the basic design for the elevator. Although the Japanese association
has set a time frame of the 2030s to get a space elevator under construction
and developments are moving quickly -- Hoffman acknowledges that it could be
a little further away than that.
"I don't know if it's going to be in our lifetime or if it's 100 or 200 years
away, but it's near enough that we can contemplate how it will work."
NASA is holding a $4 million Space Elevator Challenge to encourage designs for
a successful space elevator. [source]
The next large-scale military or terrorist attack on the United States,
if and when it happens, may not involve airplanes or bombs or even
intruders breaching American borders.
Instead, such an assault may be carried out in cyberspace by shadowy
hackers half a world a way. And Internet security experts believe that
it could be just as devastating to the U.S.'s economy and infrastructure
as a deadly bombing.
Experts say last week's attack on the former Soviet republic of Georgia,
in which a Russian military offensive was preceded by an Internet
assault that overwhelmed Georgian government Web sites, signals a
new kind of cyberwar, one for which the United States is not fully prepared.
"The U.S. is probably more Internet-dependent than any place
in the world. So to that extent, we're more vulnerable than any
place in the world to this kind of attack," Burling added.
"So much of what we're doing [in the United States] is out there
on the Internet, and all of that can be taken down at once."

Rep. Barney Frank introduced a House bill Wednesday that would end
federal penalties for Americans carrying fewer than 100 grams,
or about a quarter-pound, of marijuana.
Rep. Barney Frank's intern, Avery Morrow, says Frank joked that his bill didn't
have a "high chance" of passing. Current laws targeting marijuana users place
undue burdens on law enforcement resources, punish ill Americans whose
doctors have prescribed the substance and unfairly affect African-Americans,
the Democrat from Massachusetts said.
"I absolutely agree with the legalization of recreational marijuana use as
a means to end the damaging and unproductive war on responsible, non violent
users, but if we deny individuals the right to cultivate and sell marijuana
for profit (with regulation similar that of alcohol), than we continue to
perpetuate the most damaging aspect of marijuana prohibition: the funneling
of money to gangs.
Not everyone will want, or be able to grow their own supply of marijuana,
so they will still go to the same dealers that have been supplying them
before the ban on possession was lifted.
Why not divert all of that money and tax revenue to businesses owned
by citizens and regulated by the government? Think of it, the amount of jobs
created by the rise of an entire new industry the size and scope of alcohol
(a multibillion dollar a year business), would be an astounding boom to
our floundering economy." _iReporter

LAKE WORTH, Fla. --
Edgar Mitchell's suburban Lake Worth home is a small shrine to the nine
hours and 17 minutes he spent walking on the moon. Because of his experience,
Mitchell's recent comments about unidentified flying objects and aliens
are getting a lot of attention. "It's incredible to think that we might be the only intelligent,
living system in the universe. That's not credible anymore," he told WPBF News
The Apollo 14 veteran said that he believes the U.S. government
has been covering-up the truth for more than 50 years. "Military pilots, airline pilots,
mostly, from all over the world, for 50 years, have reported these things,
but they've quit because they're told to shut up and not talk about it by military
and intelligence people," Mitchell said. The 77-year-old said the deception began
after the alleged alien landing in Roswell, N.M., in 1947. Ever since, Mitchell claims,
the government has been keeping proof of alien life -- and alien visits -- under wraps.
The issue gained steam earlier this week when Mitchell told a British radio
interviewer that he knows that the government knows about life in outer space.
"I've been saying the same damn words for 10 years, almost verbatim,
and all of a sudden, here I'm global news," he said.

A pact made by a group of teens to get pregnant and raise their babies together is at least partly behind a sudden spike in pregnancies at Gloucester High School, school officials said. Principal Joseph Sullivan told Time magazine in a story published Wednesday that the girls confessed to making the pact after the school began investigating a rise in pregnancies that has left 17 girls at the school carrying a child. Normally, there are about four pregnancies a year at the school. Sullivan told Time that nearly half of the expecting students, none over 16, were involved. Sullivan said students were coming to the school clinic multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and "seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were." Some of the girls reacted to the news they were pregnant with high fives and plans for baby showers, Sullivan said. One of the fathers "is a 24-year-old homeless guy," Sullivan told the magazine. Superintendent Christopher Farmer confirmed the deal to WBZ-TV, saying the girls had "an agreement to get pregnant."He said the girls are generally "girls who lack self-esteem and have a lack of love in their life." The first reports of the students' apparent plan to get pregnant were in the Gloucester Daily Times in March, when Sullivan said students were reporting that the girls were getting pregnant on purpose. The rash of pregnancies has shaken the seaside city about 30 miles north of Boston. Last month, two officials at the high school health center resigned to protest the resistance from the local hospital to the confidential distribution of contraceptives. The hospital administers the state money that funds the clinic.

A high court in South Africa ruled on Wednesday that Chinese-South Africans will be reclassified as “black,” a term that includes black Africans, Indians and others who were subject to discrimination under apartheid. As a result of this ruling, Chinese will be able to benefit from government affirmative action policies aimed at undoing the effects of apartheid. This is not the first time the ethnic status of Chinese in South Africa has changed. In fact, the racial classification of Chinese-South Africans has often shifted with the nation’s political climate and its international relations. Since 1994, South Africa has seen waves of immigrants and investment from China, and today there are as many as 300,000 Chinese living in the South Africa. But the new court decision is unlikely to benefit most of them or trigger another mass migration– it applies only to ethnic Chinese who were South African citizens before 1994 (and their descendants), a much smaller number of around 10,000 to 12,000.

Australian researchers said Wednesday they have developed a means of producing a "natural condom" which could prevent the spread of AIDS. The Melbourne researchers said they believe men could reduce their risk of contracting the HIV virus, which causes the deadly disease AIDS, by applying the female hormone, oestrogen, to their penis once a week.
"You create what you could call a natural condom," Short told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. "You create a biological membrane which the virus can't get through."
Short, a strong advocate of the circumcision of men as a protection against HIV, said he had not yet done tests to prove that the virus was defeated by the keratin cover. But the researchers said the technique, which does not protect against other sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy, could provide a cheap and simple method of guarding against HIV around the world.
The research, detailed in the Public Library of Science medical journal PLoS ONE, is expected to be tested in clinical trials in Africa. Source Breitbart.com
University of Melbourne researcher Professor Roger Short said that use of an oestrogen cream could quadruple the thin layer of the protein keratin on the skin and thereby provide a natural defensive layer.

Today is a sad day for the black community. Detectives Mike Oliver, Marc Cooper and Gescard Isnora, who were involved in the shooting of Sean Bell, were acquitted of all charges. The verdict has caused an uproar of many people who feels that police has too much power and basically can get away with everything. Damn, did they really have to put 50 bullets into him......? This makes you think twice about our justice system.

A man who pleaded guilty to a felony drug possession charge after investigators accused him of selling cocaine alongside burritos was sentenced Monday to three years in prison.
Agustin Cardona-Ruiz, 44, sold cocaine to undercover cops over the counter at the Taqueria DF restaurant on the 800 block of Lashley Street in January after the investigators ordered food “and a Coke,” according to reports. Police charged him with seven counts of felony possession and distribution of cocaine, four misdemeanor counts of child abuse (investigators said he sold the cocaine in front of his preschool-age children), two counts of illegal possession of a weapon and driving under restraint. Cardona-Ruiz later accepted a plea bargain to drop all other charges in exchange for pleading guilty to a single felony possession charge.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a hold on Cardona-Ruiz a few days after his Jan. 11 arrest. Although he is a legal immigrant from Mexico, the felony conviction could lead to his deportation after he finishes his jail sentence.

Raul Castro is revolutionizing his brother's island in small but significant ways — the latest in a decree Friday allowing ordinary Cubans to have cell phone service, a luxury previously reserved for the select few. The new president could be betting greater access to such modern gadgets will quell demand for deeper change. Many Cubans hope cell phones and new appliances are only the beginning for a post-Fidel Castro government that will improve their lives. Communist bureaucracy currently limits everything from Internet access to home ownership.

A Texas woman who said she was forced to remove a nipple ring with pliers in order to board an airplane called Thursday for an apology by federal security agents and a civil rights investigation. "I wouldn't wish this experience upon anyone," Mandi Hamlin said at a news conference. "My experience with TSA was a nightmare I had to endure. No one deserves to be treated this way." Hamlin, 37, said she was trying to board a flight from Lubbock to Dallas on Feb. 24 when she was scanned by a Transportation Security Administration agent after passing through a larger metal detector without problems. Hamlin wants an apology from the TSA and an investigation by the agency's civil rights office. Allred said she might consider legal action if the TSA does not apologize. The conduct of TSA was cruel and unnecessary," Allred wrote. "The last time that I checked a nipple was not a dangerous weapon."
