In the late '80s, Johnny Boone became known around the world as the head
of the largest domestic marijuana ring. Now the 65-year-old is on the run
and facing new charges. Twenty years ago, the feds seized nearly 200 tons
of marijuana from the so-called Cornbread Mafia. In 1987, he and 73 members
of the Cornbread Mafia were captured and sentenced to decades in prison
on drug charges. They were accused of smuggling drugs inside cattle, helping
to grow the marijuana trade in cold climates.
A few months ago, the attention turned back to Boone's Washington County
farm after state police found more marijuana plants. "DEA's got paper on him,
2,500 plants or so," said McCubbin. "He's wanted on a federal warrant, so
we don't have a choice but to attempt to arrest him." Police seized weapons
and pictures, including a photo with his young child next to some infant
marijuana plants, but there was no sign of Boone.
If Boone is convicted, he faces 600 months in prison.
Marshals have put up a $10,000 reward for Boone's capture.
