A man who pleaded guilty to a felony drug possession charge after investigators accused him of selling cocaine alongside burritos was sentenced Monday to three years in prison.
Agustin Cardona-Ruiz, 44, sold cocaine to undercover cops over the counter at the Taqueria DF restaurant on the 800 block of Lashley Street in January after the investigators ordered food “and a Coke,” according to reports. Police charged him with seven counts of felony possession and distribution of cocaine, four misdemeanor counts of child abuse (investigators said he sold the cocaine in front of his preschool-age children), two counts of illegal possession of a weapon and driving under restraint. Cardona-Ruiz later accepted a plea bargain to drop all other charges in exchange for pleading guilty to a single felony possession charge.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a hold on Cardona-Ruiz a few days after his Jan. 11 arrest. Although he is a legal immigrant from Mexico, the felony conviction could lead to his deportation after he finishes his jail sentence.
